Imbler was founded in 1891 by Jesse Imbler who gave ground for the city from his own farmland.  The city was designed with a wide main street as the market road to the Depot for the UP Railroad Line which ran along the plat.  Agriculture boomed and a flour mill, grain elevator and fruit packing sheds appeared along the rail line.

Imbler became known as the grass seed capital of the world due to the high quality of the seed being produced.
